Last season was another without a title for Panathinaikos in the Greek Super League.   In the new season, the team from Athens started in the Europa League qualifications, where they won 6-1 on aggregate score against Bulgarian Botev Plovdiv. In the first leg, in Athens, Panathinaikos won only 2-1. However, in the rematch in Plovdiv, the Greek side dominated from the start, so they secured a big 4-0 victory and easy progress to the next phase. Now, Panathinaikos will have a much harder opponent in legendary Ajax. 

For Ajax, the previous season was surely the worst in the 21st century, as they finished fifth in Eredivisie. This season, the club that won 36 Dutch championship titles started in the Europa League qualifications against Serbian Vojvodina. Ajax had surprisingly many problems in the first leg in the Netherlands, but they still secured a 1-0 win. In the second leg, the Serbian team was in contention almost the whole match, but two late goals for Ajax sealed the victory and progressed to the next phase, where they will meet with Panathinaikos.
